The Distinguished Service Cross is an award for members of the Armed Forces of the United States who, while serving in any capacity with the US Army, distinguish themselves by extraordinary heroism not justifying the award of the Medal of Honour. This particular design is actually the second design. The first was heavily ornamented with oak leaves, which detracted from the classic arms of the cross.
This decoration was authorized in July 1918.
