Update
The Commemorative Walk is underway, we turned the first sod on 1st June 2010. Newspapers and WIN TV recorded the activities for posterity.
We all sighed in relief as we now have solid evidence that we actually doing something. Mayor of Mitchell Shire, Bill Melbourne, Brig Mark Holmes, Area Commander Puckapunyal, and our own President Ross Stewart did the honours.
Bruno Grollo of Grocon, when he heard of our little project was only too happy to give us a Centurion tank but before it was uplifted along came Black Saturday. So calling in more local knowledge we had it restored to fighting trim.
24 January 2011
After a long year of nothing much happening, the new State Government came good on their promise of $1.2m.
The frame work is up for Luscombe Bowl, the roofing is about to go on, the electrician is about to commence, the interpretive displays are in production and the first lot of engraved pavers have been laid.
We are still aiming for a March 9th opening of Stage One but this is not confirmed yet.
All are invited.
OFFICIAL OPENING OF STAGE 1 (LUSCOME BOWL)
VETERANS' WALK AT SEYMOUR
The purpose of the Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Walk is to commemorate the service of all who played their part in what turned out to be tumultuous part of Australia’s history and will, in the interpretative centre, give an accurate history of the times prior to military commitment, the period of our involvement and the aftermath
Stage 1 features the completion of a full size replica of Luscombe Bowl (where entertainers did their thing at Nui Dat) and a Memorial Cairn dedicated to those died during their service in Vietnam.
The event details are as follows:
· Place – High Street, Seymour.
· Date - Wednesday, 30 March 2011.
· Commences - 2.30 pm.
· Dress – Neat/tidy dress with medals.
· Refreshments at the Seymour RSL following the ceremony.
The Mitchell Sub-Branch floated the idea of the Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Walk at State Council meeting some three years ago at which time the State Council gave its full support to the project.
Now is the time for Sub-Branches and individual veterans to get behind the project and support it by attending the opening of Stage 1 on 30 March 2011.
For Sub-Branches – if there are groups attending from your Sub-Branch, please advise the Secretary (Ross Gregson) at secretary@mitchell.vvaavic.org.au or telephone 5792 3227 of group numbers attending
For individuals – just send an e-mail or phone as above.
